With a very interesting cultural background, this project involved two houses originally designed by Jack Hepwoth (1911 – 2003), a noted modern artist and, then subsequent architect, in the Glastonbury and Somerset region. Mr Hepworth was the cousin and student of the more widely recognised Barbara Hepworth. The two houses are considered to be of significant architectural merit and were featured in the architectural press (The Architect & Building News vol.210, No12, 20 September 1956) on their completion. The homes were built for John Colby Morland.
The original building has been extended over the years. Then, in 2009, Andrew Kirby Architects were appointed by the current owners to undertake a sensitive replacement extension of the sun room structure on the west wing of the property. We also undertook design proposals for a new entrance lobby and terrace extension to the second (timber frame) home to the east.
Our work was aimed at being as sympathetic as possible to the original designs, and worked to ensure a high level of detailing, materials specifications and craftsmanship was achieved in the completed project. This required bespoke details and workmanship for the glazing, rooflights and shading to ensure a modern, robust and thermally comfortable space within an important piece of British mid century modern architecture.
