As part of a South Devon and Dartmoor wide Community Housing programme by South Hams District Council, AK. Architects are appointed architects under the SHDC framework for delivering multiple sites in South Devon.
Working in collaboration with Arcadis, we have developed a strong Social Impact, community housing model, which provides energy environmentally driven and efficient homes at ‘truly affordable’ rates to local residents of rural towns and villages.
Part of this important regional work includes working with local not for profit community groups such as Community Land Trusts (CLT), Local Parish Councils, or other community interest companies (CIC), to understand need, develop a brief and deliver eco homes at approximately 55% to 65% of local market value.
This exciting project is still in its early stages. Located in an AONB on the undeveloped coast, this village is one of the most desirable locations in South Devon, and therefore needs to meet the housing needs of local residents and young families to keep the area alive.
Given the stringent landscape impact considerations of this important area of south Devon coastline, and the strong character of the historic village, our proposals are subtle contemporary homes, designed to fit into the character of the village, but maintain their own subtle identity as a modern and relevant community housing development. With simple rendered and slate hung forms, characteristics and materials of the village are interpreted into this exciting new scheme.
